Angelique Kidjo was labelled “Africa’s premiere diva” and there is no question that Angelique is a force to be reckoned with. Ms. Kidjo hails from Benin but has travelled the world and it is easy to pick up on the influences of world music in her songs, the samba numbers, the jazzy, cubano songs, the Dave Matthews collaboration, I could go on. The bets part about this is that this woman can sing anything with anyone and that’s a fact! This dancing delight has got quite the pipes on her- she sings, I swoon! I was first introduced to Angelique Kidjo just as I started college. My university holds a street fair for all the new students the day before school starts to help introduce them to local (and not so local) businesses as well as clubs, organizations, and opportunities that the university provides to get plugged in. The local bookstore was handing out free Angelique Kidjo sample cds. I picked one up because I thought, “well, she’s African. I might enjoy this.” 2 weeks later, I was at the music store buying the entire cd. That cd was probably a significant part of the soundtrack of my undergraduate life. And I still very much appreciate the artistry and the vibrance of Angelique and her music. She performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony and recently released a Grammy award winning cd, Oyo. Ms. Kudjo is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. Her amazing vocals, dancing prowess, and cute blonde TWA make Angelique Kidjo this week’s hairspiration.
Seriously, how incredibly beautiful is this African woman???
It was hard to choose a song to post– mainly because I love them all. But I settled for a performance of her singing the African classic, Malaika. I think that song has become an African standard!
