Natural Spotlight: Brandi

Brandi is a natural hair blogger and new contributor to ZedHair
Where in Africa are you from?
I am from Malawi and grew up in the city of Blantyre.
Where are you currently based?
I am currently living in Gaborone, Botswana with my family.
When did you decide to go natural?
About 3 to 4 years ago.
What has been your experience having natural hair so far?
I love it! Every second! I didn’t think it was possible to actually like natural hair before I became natural but I am absolutely in love with it. I like it’s texture, the styles I can do, and it’s fullness when I wear it in a fro.
What is your hair regimen?
I wash with a natural shampoo once a week, deep condition after. Then moisturize, seal and detangle. Put it in twists and style the next day. I spray daily with a homemade spray or a store bought one. I do a protein treatment once a month, a henna treatment every 3 months and trim regularly.
How did you achieve the hairstyle in this picture? (6 hump style)
I always stretch my hair the night before by doing 2 strand twists. I have to do this especially because I workout every morning so if I don’t twist or tie it up in a pony-puff it will shrink and be unstylable. I find styles involving a hump (roll and tuck and pin) the easiest so that’s what I tend to favor. I section the hair accordingly then roll, tuck and pin to form humps.

Any future plans/dreams for your hair?
I just want it to be long and healthy! I’m interested to see how much longer it can get than my relaxed hair was. I want to prove to myself, and anyone else who cares, that black hair can grow!
Any advice to those considering going natural?
Seek advice before you jump in. It was only after I went natural that I realised how little I knew about how to care for it. There’s lots of free detailed information on blogs, youtube and websites, do some reading so that you are not caught off guard and end up getting incredibly frustrated with the process. And have tons of patience!
Tell us about your blog Soul Hair why and how you started it.
I realised how few blogs there were that I could relate to in terms of geography and product availability so I decided to create my own. The international blogs are very helpful but they often refer to products we cannot get easily here in southern Africa.
Tell us about your blogs ‘A Hungry African‘ and ‘Soul Canvas‘.
A hungry African was born out of a desire to be more adventurous in the kitchen. I’m not a particularly great cook and haven’t been trained in any capacity whatsoever but I like to eat delicious food! I use it to catalog the recipes I’ve tried and any other food related experiences I may have whether it be at restaurants, while traveling, on the street or at a friends house.
Soul Canvas was the first of my many blogging experiments to survive. I love to write and I love the Internet so blogging is one of my favorite hobbies. Soul Canvas is just an online space for me to share everything else that intrigues me; art, movies, music, travel, events, fashion etc. It’s content morphs from year to year but it’s always about stuff I like.
What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers?
Find a topic you never get tired of reading or writing about, your passion will easily show in your writing and that is what readers connect to. Don’t do it for the purpose of getting readership, do it because you enjoy it and it entertains you, the rest will follow. Chose a clean layout, simple memorable name, make sure your blog name matches the url (2 of mine don’t which was a huge mistake!) and don’t forget to update it regularly.
