Natural Spotlight: Kavuli Nyali-Binase

We’re really excited to bring you this Natural Spotlight interview with Kavuli Nyali-Binase, founder of GHD.


About Kavuli

Where in Africa are you from?

I am half South African and half Kenyan


Where are you currently based? 

Beautiful Cape Town, South Africa


When did you decide to go natural? 

I decided to go natural back in 2000/2001



What has been your experience having natural hair so far? 

I honestly wish that I would have remained natural all my life. Getting re-acclimated with my kinks was a little tricky at first, but once I knew what my hair needed, I was having fun and enjoying my hair. Right now I am focused on health and not length.


What is your hair regimen?

Daily

  1. Spray hair lightly with plain water
  2. Seal the moisture in with oil
  3. Seal the oil in with a water based hair cream
  4. Base scalp lighly with oil of choice lightly

Weekly

  1. Pre-poo with a oil or conditioner of my choice
  2. Shampoo (once a week)
  3. Deep Condition (Alternate moisture and protein)
  4. Co-wash (once a week)
  5. Moisturize and seal using the L.O.C. Method as usual
  6. Roller-set

Monthly

  1. Hot Oil Treatment
  2. Clarifying Shampoo
  3. Protein Conditioner
  4. Moisture Conditioner
  5. Moisturize and seal using the L.O.C. method (look out for more on the LOC method next week)
  6. Use my heat pass (direct heat)

Protective Styles

  1. French Braid for 5 days out of the week ( February 1 to March 29th )
  2. Sew-in weave for 8 weeks (March 30th to May 25th )
  3. Phony pony or phony bun for 5 days out of the week ( May 25th to July 20th )
  4. Box braids for 8 weeks ( July 20th to September 14th  )

How did you achieve the hairstyle in these pictures?

Flexi-Rod


This look was created with flexi-rods I found at DisChem (a South African Pharmacy store). I washed, deep conditioned and moisturized my hair before setting the hair in the flexi-rods

Bantu Knot-out


I achieved this look by setting my freshly washed, deep conditioned and moisturized hair in bantu knots overnight. I released and fluffed them in the morning with a little coconut oil on my finger tips.

Any future plans/dreams for your hair? 

I am really focused on keeping the ends of my hair healthy and thick. I recently cut my bra-strap length hair back to my shoulders due to thin and unsightly ends. Once I have mastered this, I plan to grow my hair all the way down my back. I don’t care how long it takes.


Any advice to those considering going natural?

Do your research first! Transitioning from relaxed to natural is no child’s play. Keeping a good balance of moisture and protein is really the key along with low manipulation hairstyles. If your going to bite the bullet and do a big chop, embrace whatever texture your natural hair will be. Your hair is unique and it deserves tender loving care.

What prompted you to start blogging?

I decided to start blogging back in 2009 when I read a NY Times article about women going natural. I was perplexed about why this would be news. My natural hair is not a trend, it’s growing out of my scalp. I realized that I had an opinion and I wanted it to be heard.

What has the response been like so far?

It’s been absolutely amazing! I receive emails from women with all different hair types (relaxed, natural, loc’d etc.) thanking me for my hair advice. The things I write about have also landed me in a few magazines such as Seventeen SA, Cosmopolitan SA, ELLE SA and most recently True Love Magazine. I’m grateful for all the exposure and I just want to continue empowering women in whatever way I can. 

What are the plans for the future of GHD?

I would like to come out with a GHD product line eventually. I think we rely too much on the overseas market to provide us with quality hair products. We live among lush resources that aren’t being utilized properly. Perhaps a small book is in the works as well. Watch this space.

Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?

Be honest, unapologetic and one of a kind. Everyone wants to here what YOU have to say, so speak your mind.
